The area that is now Times Square was originally known as Longacre Square. When the headquarters for The New York Times moved into the area in 1904, the name began to change. It may be known as a major commercial district now, but Times Square originally grew in popularity for being one of New York’s biggest red light districts. The gathering on New Year’s Eve also made the Square popular It wasn’t until the 1990s when Rudy Giuliani came into office that the Crossroads of the World cleaned up and became a more family-friendly commercial center.
